Sondliwe Pamisa is a Zimbabwean-British interdisciplinary artist living and working in London, UK.
Drawing upon literary, cinematic and musical influence to produce freeform narratives that capture the expansiveness of the Afropolitan experience, Pamisa’s figurative and abstract works examine the complexities of diasporic living and identity.
With a practice consisting of multiple disciplines including painting, photography, poetry and sculpture; Pamisa’s work chronicles the poetic and lyrical nuances of daily life. In dynamic scenic vignettes, motifs of free-market stalls, hidden figures, and domesticity, are revisited in harmoniously melodic composition, to transfigure the cultural clashes and historical narratives of post-colonialism; particularly those of the artist’s native Zimbabwe.
Through a repurposing of found materials, which serve as exploratory fields of sustainability and education; themes of sovereignty, liberation and legacy are further contextualised to gain insight into the adaptability and nimble movement needed across the global landscape.
A recipient of the Griffin Gallery Residency operated by Colart (2021), and a fellow of Adidas London & GUAP Magazine’s Original Creator’s Network Class of 2024; his work has been commissioned for film, featured in campaigns and exhibited in group and solo shows including IWOYI: Within The Echo (2024), En Route, Southwark Park Galleries (2024), Stories We Could Tell, Roundhouse (2024), and Tate Collective: Capturing Our World In Common (2023).
